Sisters in the Brotherhood
A nice commission I received from the Carpenters Union in Sydney, Cape Breton. A 5 foot hand carved plaque for the inside of their new digs. Of course I enjoyed every minute of carving this but when a client appreciates your work like these folks do it really goes a long way. Not only did I receive a card of thanks but a couple of work shirts 'Sisters in the Brotherhood'! I wouldn't have known of this commission had it not been for my fellow woodcarving pal Elizabeth Brown. She was too busy carving her signature Santas so she recommended me. Elizabeth and I are cooking up something for early March so stay tuned.... |
The Rabbit. This is a very soft stone - flaky, chalky with metal veins throughout. I'm not that well versed in stone talk so you should see it for real if you're in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Secord Gallery). There is a random transparency in it that gives this stone lots of life and busy-ness. I chose this particular stone because in its raw state it looked very watery to me and I'm drawn to the marine colour palette. The shape of this however, did not lead me to carve anything nautical and once all the sanding and polishing was completed the colour seemed more earthy. The fine folk at the East Hants & Districts Chamber of Commerce commissioned me to create a sign for the new park they are creating in our community You can follow the progress here |
It's a little bizarre to fully carve a piece and then start poking holes in it. At first all is 'nice' and straight forward but then.... enough of that! Where's that big fat drill bit...? Soon I'll ask Bob (Young) to take a proper photo of this because you can't see the glass which is a textured pale blue. The smaller piercings which are arranged in a particular pattern, hold small glass nuggets. |
Working on a commission of several small humpback whales and my brother was in the shop with me. Wish I could take credit for this cleverness but after cutting several of these out on the bandsaw he decided to show off a little... |
